A letter from Anna Adair follows: WILLIAMS JAMES ADAIR, my father, was apprenticed to a dry good merchant in Armaugh, Ireland. Here he suffered cold in winter and slept in the store. When a very young man he came to Canada and worked on the farm of great-aunt Ellen Lewis's, near Ailsa Craig. There he met Winnifred Ellen Evans. He went with Grandfather, John Evans, to Huron County, Michigan, where they took up homesteads of 40 acres each. (Sandy Fraser went too and took an adjoining 40 acres.) Later the family joined them. When William was 20 years of age he and Winnie were married by Rev. MacCarthy of the Presbyterian church, Cass City. The land was covered with large pine trees. They worked very hard clearing to plant patches of grain, they endured great hardships. One spring when mother was sick with the grip, Father shot a robin to make broth for her. The men walked seven miles to Cass City and carried all supplies-flour etc., home on their backs. Mother had a rocking chair Father brought home in the manner. They were married five years when I, Anna, was born, Jan. 24, 1988. Uncle Dave C Evans, then a youth of 17, rode horseback over snowdrifts that covered the fences, six miles to Gagetown, for the doctor. The small rocking chair and butter dish Father bought as gifts.

In winter, Father worked in a lumber camp in Pinconning, Michigan. Uncle Evans, then a young boy, stayed with Mother. Father was not equal to such hard work and exposure and lack of nourishing food, he developed consumption. They struggled along for two years on the farm, in which his health became worse. Then they sold and moved to Cass City. Here Hugh was born. Father did light work but was soon confined to bed. After being sick for four years he developed Typhoid and died 17 Mar. 1895.

Of him, D. C. Evans wrights -In his sterling qualities you have much to be proud of, for he was a man of unquestionalbe worth; a gentleman of rare refinement." Evan T. Evans wrote me - "Anna, don't you know your Father, to me, was the perfect man. I can see his smile and the twinkle in his eyes yet. Tho he and your mother faced hardships too numerous to mention, I never heard him complain; he was always ready to do more than his share of the hardest work; and to deprive himself for those he loved seemed his greatest joy. Yes, some Father! And to me the best Big Brother I ever had. I have pleasant memories of the times spent with your parents." (Evan would have been 12 to 17 years during those winters.)
