Grand Canyon North Rim--the best kept secret

By Dixie Brunner

When asked what the number-one natural tourist attraction in the U.S. is, "Grand Canyon" would surely top everyone's list.

Few would argue that the Grand Canyon is the most desired tourist destination. Words suck as "awesome," "incredible," and "magnificent," seem shallow when describing one of the seven wonders of the world. It's matchless beauty and grandeur go beyond the shallow ability of human description.

But many words have been written, and experiences shared about the wonders of the Grand Canyon. The national park doesn't have a name recognition problem. The Grand Canyon's South Rim is literally overrun with U.S. and international visitors. Large crowds and bumper to bumper traffic are the norm at the scenic sight.

But the best-kept secret of the Grand Canyon adventure isn't discovered by visiting the arid South Rim anyway. The best way to see the Grand Canyon is via the North Rim!

Grand Canyon's North Rim is a visitor's dream come true. It has the same incredible views, improved trails and facilities that the South Rim has.

The only thing the North Rim doesn't offer you are the crowds.

When approaching the northern canyon access, you drive through the scenic Kaibab Plateau-North Rim Parkway. The Parkway traverses the 1500 square mile North Kaibab National Forest/Grand Canyon National Game Preserve. Travelers drive through the gentle green forests which rise dramatically to 9,000 feet in elevation. The Kaibab, which the Paiute Indians called "the mountain lying down" changes from life zones of the Sonoran desert zone at one extreme, to the frosty climate of the sub- alpine zone nearer the canyon. The dense pine forest of the high Kaibab Plateau ends abruptly at the canyon's edge.

But cold isn't something you usually have to worry about at the North Rim. Pleasant temperatures are common for a summer visit. A light jacket might be good apparel to take along on your trip.

Once you reach Grand Canyon Park, you will find campgrounds and lodges you can check into. But those things can wait--the canyon is calling for you to come visit!

Upon stopping at the first overlook, you are rendered breathless as you take in the panoramic view. The rugged, restless collection of colors and canyons, buttes and mesas, wildlife and vegetation bring tears to most people's eyes.

The canyon offers you a multitude of moods, looking different every minute of every day and night. Each of the well-maintained overlooks provides a different slant on the canyon and the Colorado River, occasionally seen below. Those catching a sunset or sunrise are in for a truly inspiring sight.

There are many ways to experience the Grand Canyon North Rim. From the Kanab Airport, flights to view the spectacle can be arranged at your convenience. Many find that hiking to the bottom, or riding the exhilarating Colorado River rapids, is the only real way to experience the Canyon.

Whichever way you choose to explore it, immerse yourself in a visit to the Grand Canyon North Rim. With plenty of time and access to meditate on the awesome beauty, one leaves the canyon feeling more bonded and in tune with the natural wonder. Don't cheat yourself--have a Grand Canyon North Rim experience!
